Why Cold-Pressed Oil Beats Regular Moisturiser | Humble Bee

Why Cold-Pressed Oil Is Better Than Regular Moisturiser

Turn over any moisturiser in your bathroom right now and read the first three ingredients.

Chances are, water — listed as "aqua" — is sitting right at the top, followed by something you can't pronounce, followed by something else you can't pronounce.

That's not an accident. And it's worth understanding why.

What's Actually in Your Regular Moisturiser?

The average moisturiser is between 60 and 80 percent water. That's not inherently bad — water helps ingredients spread easily and gives a product its familiar cream texture. But water creates a problem that most brands quietly solve for you.

Water breeds bacteria, mould, and yeast. Any product containing water must be chemically preserved to prevent microbial growth. That's why you'll find parabens, phenoxyethanol, or other synthetic preservatives in almost every water-based product on the shelf. They're not there to help your skin. They're there to protect the product's shelf life.

Beyond preservatives, water-based products require emulsifiers — ingredients that stop the water and oil components from separating in the bottle. These add to the formula complexity, the ingredient count, and the potential for skin irritation.

The result is a product that is, at its core, largely water — carrying a payload of stabilisers, emulsifiers, and synthetic preservatives to stay stable on the shelf.

What Cold Pressing Actually Is — and Why It Matters for Skin

Cold pressing is one of the oldest methods of extracting oil from seeds, nuts, and plants. The process is exactly what it sounds like: mechanical pressure is applied — without heat — to extract oil naturally.

Heat is the enemy of nutritional value. When oil is extracted using heat, the vitamins, antioxidants, and fatty acids in the plant material are partially or fully destroyed. What remains is a more neutral, cheaper-to-produce oil — but stripped of much of what made it worth using on skin in the first place.

Cold pressing preserves the oil in its most complete form. The result retains its natural Vitamin E, antioxidants, and omega fatty acids — everything that makes it genuinely effective, rather than simply moisturising in texture.

What Your Skin Actually Absorbs — Oil vs Cream

Here is what most people don't realise: your skin does not absorb water. It absorbs lipids — fats and oils. The skin's outer barrier is itself a lipid layer, designed to regulate moisture and keep irritants out. When you apply a water-based moisturiser, the water sits on the surface and evaporates within minutes. What actually penetrates is a fraction of the formula.

Cold-pressed oils, by contrast, are entirely bioavailable to the skin. They are lipids meeting a lipid barrier — structurally compatible in a way that water-based products simply aren't. This is why people who switch to oil-based skincare routinely find they need far less product to achieve better results. There's no water to evaporate, no filler to work through. Just concentrated, skin-compatible nutrition.

Jojoba and Grapeseed — Two Oils Your Skin Recognises

Not all oils are equal. Two cold-pressed oils stand out for their universal skin compatibility.

Jojoba oil is technically a liquid wax ester, not a true oil — which makes it unlike anything else in the natural world. Its molecular structure closely mirrors the skin's own sebum, meaning the skin recognises and accepts it readily. It moisturises deeply without clogging pores, making it one of the only oils genuinely suitable for oily and acne-prone skin as well as dry skin.

Grapeseed oil is lightweight, non-comedogenic, and naturally rich in Vitamin E and linoleic acid. It absorbs quickly without leaving any greasy residue and is gentle enough for the most reactive skin types — including on lips.

Both are cold-pressed at Humble Bee and used exactly as nature made them, without dilution, refinement, or modification.

How to Make the Switch

Transitioning from a water-based moisturiser to a cold-pressed oil is simpler than it sounds. Your skin may take a short adjustment period — two to three weeks — particularly if it has been used to strong preservatives or emulsifiers. This is normal, and it passes.

Apply two to three drops to slightly damp skin. Damp skin helps the oil spread evenly and absorb more effectively. That's usually all you need — far less than the amount of cream or lotion you'd typically use.

Less product. No preservatives. No water. Just what your skin actually needs.

Every Humble Bee skincare and lip care product is made from cold-pressed jojoba oil and grapeseed oil — no water, no fillers, nothing your skin doesn't need. If you've been wondering what your skin would feel like without the extras, this is a clean place to start.
